M-1 Trover Rural Pathways Program

The M-1 Trover Rural Pathways Program is designed to maintain interest in rural practice among rural M-1 students. Students who come from small towns, defined as having a home town with a population less than 30,000, may apply.

All M-2s must do 32 contact hours of elective time. This can be one of the most stressful times of medical school, so this Pathways program allows selected rural students to take a few evening sessions during the M-1 year and one day of M-1 spring break and earn 16 contact hours. This cuts in half the amount of time required for elective work in the M-2 year. Selected M-1s will attend 3 Rural Medicine Elective sessions in Louisville during the M-1 year.

During Spring Break, the M-1s will also attend one full day session in Madisonville that covers:

  • Rural scholarships and loan payment programs
  • Definition of rural
  • Definition of underserved
  • Emergency services in rural areas
  • Residency training for rural practice
  • Realities of rural practice ("meet the docs")

A small book allowance is included for those selected (the book allowance will be credited to the University Bookstore in the student's name at the beginning of the M-2 year). Selected M-1s are reimbursed for the cost of travel and lodging (if needed) for the spring break session.

To apply, download and complete the application form (in Word format) and fax it to 270-824-3446. Questions regarding the M-1 Pathways program may be directed to Steve Fricker at sfricker@trover.org or by phone at 1-800-217-9149.
